I don’t know if that was “amazing”, with or without capital letters and an exclamation mark. It was just basic – and no more than that – journalism. Asking questions, pulling the politician up on lies/incorrect answers/hypocracy. No more.
The interviewer should have asked about Farage’s seeming lack of problem with northern/western Europeans, though – I assume it’s only assumed/suggested, and not genuine. As someone who left the Tories over the Maastrict treaty – in 1992 – his problem isn’t just with “southern and eastern European” immigration, but with all immigration. He does state this, of course, but when pushed, he goes on about “quality” (like the quality of his German wife, presumably), and about Romanians, Greeks, Spaniards, etc., which is more than disingenous, but it seems that political discourse in the UK is that even an outright nasty party like UKIP can only openly go on about, what presumably, Fararge (‘privately’ or in pubs) might refer to “wops, wogs and nig-nogs”, and no longer about “frogs, and huns/ krauts”. Which might be seen as progress. Possibly. Very possibly.

A reasonable riposte would have been to ask whether this would also include Czechs, Poles, immigrants from the Baltic states, or even the 1/3 of Germany that was “communist” until 1990? Or maybe Finland, which while certainly never ‘communist’, being granted sovereign independence after the October Revolution and continued to have relations with the USSR that might be appropriate for a country in a similar situation to Ukraine today, was an associate member of Comecon as well as the then EFTA/EEC and took part, as a member, of both the Intervision Song Contest as well as Eurovision’s one. What about Croatia?
When pushed, he seems to dislike all foreigners (who are workers), but especially poor ones, and especially those who are poor and not from the former British empire.

Entertaining but I can’t help but feel that Labour’s only hope of winning next year is the UKIP bubble not bursting again as it did in 2010, 2005 and 2001.
Which really does say it all – the once mighty British Labour Party owing what chance it has of forming a government on the rise of a particularly vicious brand of right wing populism to split the Tory vote.
