Happy New Year Resolution – Don’t Read anything in Spiked or by Spiked writers

January 1, 2014 at 1:35 pm (media, Rosie B)

Just found this which I once copied from a comments thread. To save you reading Brendan O’Neill and the rest of the Spiked gang:-

1. [Subject] reveals a contempt for the working classes.

2. [Subject] is thinly disguised misanthropy.

3. [Subject] is merely an exercise in liberal self-congratulation.

4. [Subject] encourages a culture of victimhood.

5. [Subject] shows we’re governed by alarmist scaremongers.

6. [Subject] is an attempt to censor dissent.

Covers all the bases.

Happy New Year!

You could try to publish the above as a poem, though it is probably too profound for the current poetry mob with the preference for internal decoration.
Better something with which to paper the walls
of a comfortably alamode home of cheap contentment
than the life of a thinker with metaphorical balls
confined by prevailing winds to a drip-dark tent
irked by the drips indeed, and the crawlers too
and the deceptive quiet with its the icy dew ….

In a recent strange piece by Brendan O’Neill he seemed to be saying that the suicide bombers in Russia had been encouraged by Western concerns about anti-gay legislation.

The other points raised in the articles (Western Media double standards) are valid though I haven’t read some of articles Brendan is referring to due to paywalls.

I won’t say Brendan O is always wrong. But even when he’s right, he’s very annoying.

    Rosie:

“I won’t say Brendan O is always wrong. But even when he’s right, he’s very annoying.”

That, to me, sums up Spiked in general. Very annoying and generally wrong. They come across as smartish but very juvenile, thinking that being determinedly ‘controversial’ somehow makes a contribution to politics.

Who hasn’t come across a silly reactionary who, when shown to be silly, says “made you think though!”, as if their silliness were a virtue?

The “made you think” stars along with “it’s causing controversy, there must be something to it” if someone says the earth is flat.

Spiked articles always have the air that no-one else outwith their gang has anything worth saying about anything.

Which is why they will never understand why they are pointless wankers.

Good list, but you missed out: ‘7. [Subject] proves that everything Slobodan Milosevic did during the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo was entirely justified and actually rather admirable.’
