The Mail and Sun’s “paedophile” campaign

March 1, 2014 at 1:37 am (child abuse, children, Daily Mail, Jim D, labour party, Murdoch, relativism, truth)

Now The Sun (which, like the Mail, has a record of publishing pictures of young girls with little clothing on) joins in:

'Labour chiefs: It’s OK to have sex with 10-yr-olds' - The Sun exposes full horror of paedophile plan:

Look, the truth is that back in the seventies, the left (reformist and revolutionary) was all over the shop on this issue. I’m pleased to say that my comrades and I (in what’s now the AWL) took a firm line on the question of under-aged sex and supported the principle of an age of consent (gay and straight) of around 15 or 16 – but there were some on the left who didn’t. Even a candidate for leadership of the Labour Party (in 1992), Bryan Gould, expressed sympathy with PIE, in a letter politely declining their invitation to him to sponsor their campaign.

The fact that some now-respectable figures in the Labour Party didn’t regard this as a  particularly worrying issue, and didn’t protest about the PIE’s affiliation to the NCCL at the time, is symptomatic of the way things were then. That doesn’t make it OK, but it’s how it was, as the left struggled to come to terms with sexual politics, and sophisticated paedophiles cynically utilised the gay rights/sexual liberation agenda to legitimise their cause in the eyes of naïve idiots on sections of the left at the time.

It’s significant that amongst the loudest voices raising the alarm about the PIE at the time were gay activists, who didn’t want to be associated with paedophilia.

The far left, with one or two exceptions (the IMG and the pre-fusion WSL, neither of which now exist) was hostile to the PIE.

I know it’s what old gropers and their apologists always say, but on this matter it’s true: the past is another country. That doesn’t excuse those who were negligent and/or indifferent at the time, but it is the context.

And, certainly, the Sun and the Mail have no right to witch-hunt anyone over this .

Indeed; all gay activists at that time (only a decade or so after legalisation in England & Wales, *before* legalisation in Scotland & NI) would have lived through a time when their sexual orientation was commonly seen as morally on a par with paedophilia, and wouldn’t have wanted to go back there.

When Roy Harper faces trial this August, it will be hard to get this out of our minds, because unlike Glitter, King, Savile, the Stuart Hall who did It’s a Knockout and everyone arrested or charged under Yewtree, his appeal was overwhelmingly to a young New Leftist audience which might have had a crossover with the NCCL/PIE connection. (The lyrics to Harper’s song “Forbidden Fruit” – an obscure corner of his catalogue until he was charged – definitely confirm that for some people who would have regarded TOTP or Jim’ll Fuck It as unenlightened Tory muck, the sexual acts he describes in the song were seen as a necessary next step from advances and liberations which, in themselves, are babies that should never be thrown out with the bathwater of PIE.)

But the elephant in the room here is the vast and widespread rumours about senior members of the Conservative establishment at the time, possibly including the PM who lost power to the strength of the organised working class 40 years ago this week, having been part of paedophile rings; that they did not only support it on an intellectual / theoretical level, before realising as they matured what a mistake they had made, they actually *did* those things on quite a serious level. I am absolutely convinced that the Mail knows full well that its own party, its own side, had those peccadilloes, and started it to stop any of that stuff officially “coming out”, just as (not to detract for one second from the pain and stunted lives suffered by Savile & Hall’s many victims) the whole Savile / Yewtree thing was arguably pushed at the time it was because, with the decline in Murdoch’s standing in 2011/12, it seemed likely that it might be the next big scandal.

Here’s what I had to say about it (and some other stuff) a while ago:

I don’t know about the (fused) WSL, but I recall the national committee of ‘Classfighter’ (i.e. Socialist Organiser / WSL and Workers Power youth) were in favour of either a much reduced, or possibly no ‘age of consent’ in about 1983. It was taken as read that this would obviously mean ‘informed consent’ although that is terminology from a latter time. They were correct in this.

I would be surprised if Revolution (youth IMG, maybe then called the Socialist League) comrades were not of the same view. I’d imagine that Militant called for the burning of those having sex outside marriage (I exaggerate to point out how backward they were on social issues).

A socialist sticks to their views and fights their corner no matter what may come their way or how isolated they may be (e.g. Victory to Argentina over the Malvinas!). That is not to say that one should not always be self-critical; reconsider matters in light of new thinking or research and nor should a socialist continue with some line just because some successful revolutionary long ago said such.

But that’s not what is happening here. There are two type of rogues – those who have moved right to come out with this reactionary rubbish, or probably worse, those who still see the worth of the older line but run scared. I wonder which the author is?

Although there maybe is a third answer. I feel the 30-40 years of defeat in Britain is having an ever corrosive effect on the political soul of Lefts, a little like what happened under Stalinism.

When oppositionists were then, ‘shot like dogs’, many of them made the most extraordinary, and indeed impossible, confessions. Many undoubtedly did such to try and protect their family but I think not a few, like in Orwell’s 1984, actually came to believe they were wrong and carried out these terrible crimes and deserved to be shot – they welcomed it.

I envisage some sort of online ‘UK government (sponsored by the Daily Mail) daily confession site’ a few years hence when various lost UK lefts will bid to go on and denounce themselves for e.g. their ‘lack of patriotism that held Britain back in the 1970s’; ‘once having friends who were Muslims’ (a group now expelled), or being ‘disrespectful to their teachers 40 years before’ – and then throwing themselves on the mercy of the online audience who get to vote on their fate. I will be voting for their immediate liquidation to put them out of their pathetic misery.

I maintain – No to the suppression of the sexuality of young people. No to the rewriting of history.

It’s an example of when it is very difficult to raise a communist line, but how it is necessary to do – the long descent of the WSL to today’s AWL started from such cowardice.

You don’t even now what is the question under discussion, or at least are tellingly conflating it – we are discussing the age of consent (are 2 14 yr olds having sex engaging in child abuse?) and paedophiles.

A paedophile is “an adult or older adolescent who experiences a sexual attraction to prepubescent children” (some may say ‘underage children’ but then whose underage?- age of consent is 13 in Spain, 20 in Tunisia).

The definition does not say “and acts on this attraction”. Can I take that even you think that people should not be locked up just for what they think, especially when no one determines themselves whether they are attracted to the same sex, other sex, older partners, children etc.

The loony leftists that made this story are the ones in charge now. Consider that please. All I did at Uni was take drugs and get my balls felt and now I’m an architect .

You guys (girls, trans, x51 Facebook genderists) have historically been all over the place. Infighting, outfighting and leftfighting etc .. repeat to fade. pretty sad bunch now and you live in a microcosm that completely disregards what the labour part started out to do.

You are your own worst enemies.. and you’ve forgotten what you stood for ie the working man and democracy.

No vote for us proles on Europe???? No say?

Orson Dcott Card said it best when he said: “The dark secret of homosexual society — the one that dares not speak its name — is how many homosexuals first entered into that world through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse, and how many of them yearn to get out of the homosexual community and live normally.”

No matter how much homosexuals try to deny and back away from this sad fact it is the truth and the Left are all too willing to be part of it.

  7. R F McCarthy (@RF_McCarthy) said,

It was not just people on ‘The Left’ who took such positions but right libertarians as well.

The Libertarian Alliance – a still extant group which now describes itself as think tank, whose conferences are addressed by Tory MPs and which has long had close links with Thatcherite free market propagandists like the IEA and Adam Smith Institute published a call in the early 1980s – i.e. after the NCCL and the left backed away from the PIE – for sexual relations between adults and children to be legalised and is still posting calls for the age of consent to be reduced:

Now you are getting people popping up in comments quoting Mormon science fiction writer and all-round wingnut douchebag Orson Scott Card (one of whose series incidentally features an evil alien race called The Buggers who his teenage space cadet hero leads a genocidal war against – subtle OSC ain’t).

Like Israel paedophilia probably is a subject best avoided…..

    • Harry Tuttle said,

Tsk, tsk quite a nasty fellow aren’t you? If you don’t like other people’s opinions don’t read them…

      • R F McCarthy (@RF_McCarthy) said,

        Strange comment from someone who:

        a) comes here specifically to comment on an article which you dislike,

        b) quotes an American nutjob who is notorious for his homophobia and peddling of right wing conspiracy theories and

        c) wants to tar ‘the left’ with the paedophile brush.

I suppose you are entitled to your homophobia but there are literally countless right-wing websites and blogs where you can express it without offending anyone who hasn’t specifically gone there looking to be offended.

Choosing to pop up on a left-wing site is just trolling.

      • Harry Tuttle said,

So only overtly left wing and politically correct comments are welcome here, I see. Card isn’t a nut job, he may seem to be to people that live in a topsy turvy world where anything goes but his comments nail the reality of homosexuality extremely well which is why I quoted him…
