The Wit and Wisdom of J.P. Morgan

John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913):

“A man always has two reasons for doing anything: a good  reason and the real reason.”

If you need it spelt out, then Simon Jenkins (not someone this blog usually quotes with approval), lays it on the line, here.

A final J.P. Morgan quote that seems strangely apposite just at the moment:

“I owe the public nothing.”

How disappointing!! I thought that the ‘two reasons’ quote came from James Cannon. I’m sure i read it somewhere in his writings and if its good enough for him, it’s good enough for me.

On the other hand you schachtmanites don’t like Cannon, do you.

Many (probably most) of us Shactmanites hold Cannon in great esteem, whatever our theoretical and organisational differences with him. Indeed, a lot of us came to Shactman via Cannon…thesis, antithesis…synthetis…

Btw, Geoff: I think Cannon, somewhere name-checked J.P Morgan as saying that, which is how I’ve come to be familiar with the quote; I’ve read a lot of cannon over the years, but *no* J.P. Morgan.
