Asian Network’s Nihal on grooming

June 29, 2013 at 1:18 am (BBC, child abuse, conspiracy theories, drugs, Human rights, Islam, Jim D, men, misogyny, Pakistan, Racism, religion, sexism, thuggery)

Don’t even think about commenting on this issue without having listened to this!

Starts at 11.57

The BBC Asian Network bills the programme as follows:

Debate about grooming cases, live from Oxford

Nihal’s phone-in [in fact the phone-in is preceded by an hour's debate from Oxford, which is the crucial part of the programme -JD] is coming live from the Cowley Road in Oxford where seven men groomed and sexually abused girls as young as eleven over a period of eight years. He will be getting reaction to the sentences given to the men and asking what lessons can be learnt from what has happened.

The issues up for debate are extremely sensitive – so much so that a lot of people from the area did not want to talk to us. Five of the seven men found guilty were of Pakistani origin and most of the people who BBC Asian Network has spoken to in the area either knew them – or knew someone who knew them.

Nihal asks – who is to blame for this terrible abuse, apart from the men themselves? Why were they able to get away with the abuse over an eight year period?

If the men were so well known in the community, why were their crimes not reported sooner? Is the fact that many of them came from the Pakistani community a relevant one?

The main debate lasts for one hour and forty minutes, but it’s well worth putting the time aside for.  If you can’t do that, at least listen to the wise words of Julie Siddiqui of the Islamic Society of Britain, at about 30.20. This is only available for the next four days:

Interesting radio debate. I think the voices of the women were most pertinent placing the whole issue in a context where women cross culturally are viewed in sexual terms. In Western contexts – the sexual revolution has become an exploitative marketing extravaganza of fake sexuality and desire, ultimately selling product, but it fools people into thinking that consumption is related to happiness and women there to service male needs. Sexism has increased not decreased. Strict rules about virginity and marriage are impossible to enforce for everyone, even in closed Muslim societies and stigma damages lives and creates outcasts. Male desires can turn into guilt and perverted behaviour and the blame is put on the victim. Sex education should not be about just the nuts and bolts of parts but about what kind of life you want and how to negotiate it.

It’s not like it’s a modern phenomena, is it? Workingclass girls have always been preyed on. ‘It’s the rich that get the pleasure, it’s the poor that gets the pain.’. Of course it takes a particular manifestation in today’s society which involves people who may be less connected to the mainstream, for whatever reason. I’m not going to say anything about Islamic supremecism etc because that will just get me labelled an ‘islamophobe’.

SueR. Say what you want about Islamic nutters and do not bother about the loonie lefties that defend the idiots. Only idiot lefties could invent islamaphobia about the vile murderous bastards.

jIM – why the fuck do you allow this racist cunt to comment here?

Is often said of critics of the AWL that they pander to racism.

I had never given those arguments much credence but the way that bigots and racists are encouraged to comment on this blog suggests those critics might have a point.

Intelligent socialists tend to avoid playing to the bigots’ agenda, however, AWL members do not seem so constrained.

    This is a wasted post.

It achieved nothing and only satisfies the bigoted readers of this blog, encouraging them to scratch their itch.

Still, that’s the company you really want I shall leave you to their tender mercies. Dogs, fleas, etc

      Name some intelligent socialists?

When you said “this is a wasted post” did you mean your own comment. Modernityyawn, you are – like Mr. Racist Glasgow – like a record that has got stuck, and a very boring one at that.

No-one (and no organisation) “encourages” or “discourages” anyone to post here, and certainly no-one encourages Racist Glasgow to do so. He’s only turned up here (as has Sewage) as Dave Osler has understandably had enough.

Gone be both of you! I need a firefox plugin to remove both of your comments and those of Ms Sewage Sludge as well.

Mod, the issue of banning certain commenters is under constant review, but as I previously stated we’re always very reluctant to do it.

I honestly fail to understand what you mean by “a wasted post”, unless you mean your own. If you mean the report on the Asian Network Cowley Road debate, this was a debate conducted by an Asian radio journalist, involving predominantly Asian Muslim people, discussing a serious issue in a serious and responsible manner. How, exactly, is that encouraging bigots to “scratch an itch?”

Unless you think that no-one (including, presumably the Cowley Road audience) should discuss these issues at all?

Interesting, you’ve banned me in the past (for no apparent reason) but you’re happy to let the racist scumbag Glesga spew shit all over your blREGG. Do you prefer useless, good-for-nothing racist cunts to communists or something?

    • Jim Denham said,

You’ve never been banned: just moderated. Something we’re about to do to Jimmy G

      • Jimmy Glesga said,

Actually I am not a racist and never have been. I have never intentionally made a comment that can be construed as racist. The problem is that some idiots that post on blogs mainly idiot hard lefties have their own version of racism and lack a sense of humour.

    Waffle.

This is the flipside of the violence meted out against women across the so-called ‘non-West’ that predates any faffy sort of consumerist notions that certain commentators seem desperate to divert attention to, rather than the seething contempt most of these scum hold females in.

From BBC3: different religious background, same simmering hatred
