Meet My New Favorite Music Critic!

A rather moving post from M. Figg at Aesthetic, Not Anesthetic :
.

And he loves Cab Calloway. The man knows his stuff.

Ask him if he knows the date of the recording, or if there are any alternate takes. Find out if he thinks the arrangement used any interesting techniques, or if the soloists were innovators. Ask if he wishes the lyrics were more political, or if he remembers Calloway’s skin color.

Those are all important, often enlightening facts this person may not have access to at this time in his life. Yet his suddenly open, instantly joyous eyes somehow seem far more important.

JD adds: I notice that towards the end of the clip Henry starts singing Cole Porter’s ’Rosalie.’ As far as I know, Cab Calloway never recorded that particular song, but here’s a great version by Artie Shaw’s Orchestra (vocal: Tony Pastor) that I think is what he may have been remembering. This is for you, Henry:

More on this important topic, here and here.

… With plenty of snow…, mistletoe…, presents wrapped round your tree… OWWW!

    Beautiful, just beautiful!

Perhaps Henry’s moments of lucidity are few and far between, but that little howl came straight from his heart as the music (and perhaps some long-lost memory) touched him in places he’d seemingly forgotten he had!

And that is a powerful thing indeed.

He’s singing ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’: I can’t find a Cab Calloway version but maybe Henry once heard the the ‘Hi-de-Ho Man’ singing it live or on the radio. Note Henry’s earlier impression of Calloway’s “Hi-de-hi-de-hi! – Ho-di-ho-di-ho!” routine. Here’s Der Bingle singing I’ll Be Home For Christmas:

I was particularly moved by how miffed Henry looked when they took the headphones off. I do believe our man had a nice little groove going, perhaps for the first time in a long time!

    Scoobedy-doo, Scoobedy-doo, Scoobedy-doobedy-doobedy-doo!

    Poor Min!

Tx again for this…gave my day a real lift!
