Unimpressed TV

December 31, 2011 at 11:51 am (BBC, Galloway, Iran, islamism, Rosie B)

I haven’t watched Press TV myself except for the odd clip but what I hear about it is that it is a propaganda channel run from Tehran, and that to appear on it you have to be highly uncritical of the Iranian government.  According to the journalist Dave Osler (comment 12):-

I am generally of the ‘bus company’ theory when it comes to media outlets. Who cares who runs the bus, so long as the route takes you where you want to go?

That is why I have in the past written for the Daily Express, and happily appear on rightwing TV and radio shows (Richard Littlejohn, Nick Ferrari etc) if they want a leftie on to spark debate.

If the media offers you a platform, take it, on the sole condition that you get your message across.

But the point is that Press TV doesn’t offer that kind of platform, It carefully selects Brit lefties that will say the sort of thing that complies with its editorial line. That sort of exposure isn’t worth having.

So it’s no surprise that Press TV employs islamist and theocracy pimps like the well-known hijabbed sister-in-law Lauren Booth, Yvonne Ridley and, of course, George Galloway.

Radio 4 ran a programme about Press TV on Thursday evening, which is well worth listening to.

I would have liked to have heard more about Press TV’s audience.  I would guess that it would mostly be islamist sympathisers, and the kind of member of the far left who, a few decades ago, would have listened to Radio Moscow as their in-depth unbiassed news source.  For example, here’s a thicko who comments round these parts  (comment 5):-

Many Marxists with decades long experience in the movement have contributed to press tv, which in content and form, beats the superficial news churned out by media that Hitchens whored himself to.

George Galloway was invited to appear on the programme but did not take this chance to defend his employer.  He’s not usually shy about appearing on the BBC. However he might have been asked impertinent questions which is not the kind of thing his heroes eg Stalin, Saddam Hussein and Bashar al-Assad, would have put up with for a minute.

We know the BBC is preparing itself for the strike against Iran. I am sure the decents of this site are jerking themsleves off at the prospect.

Amazing that at a time when Press TV is to be taken off air by the British state this site decides to provide anti Press TV articles. Again Shiraz are the tool of the British state, mere servile lapdogs of the ruling class.

For what it’s worth, I would be against the British state taking off Press TV. Also, grovel to the British state as we do, the bastards have never so much as bought me a pint. Even a lapdog gets the odd tin of Chum.

A little bit strong that I’d say. I agree with you, it is entirely wrong for the station to be taken off air, but that is no reason not to discuss its limitations and editorial bias. I also hope your wrong about an impending attack on Iran. Do you really think its likely in the near future? (genuine question by the way)

Having Press TV is like inviting Goebbels to set up an office in London during WW11. The Iran fascist theocracy should be isolated and a complete trade embargo imposed. The clerics should be booted out of Britain.

Juan Cole thinks an attack by either the US or Israel on Iran is highly unlikely:

Uri Avneri is even more certain it won’t happen:

Meanwhile, just because we oppose an attack on Iran, that doesn’t mean we ignore things like this:

A balanced view (the article, not the rather silly comment that follows):

I’m not actually in favour of Press TV being taken off the air (in Britain) by the British state, but it’s not an issue I’d even consider campaigning over (I feel much the same way as Orwell did about the banning of the Daily Worker in 1940). And, for certain, no respectable working class socialist should even consider appearing on Press TV – and none has as far as I’m aware.

I am sure Marx would have his own show on Press tv, but then again if Wolff isnt a working class socialist then Marx certainly isn’t. The timing of this attack on press tv coincides perfectly with the states suppression of this news agency. The supporters of liberal intervention feel no need to support the freedom of speech of those that carry a message deemed dangerous by the British estzblishment, in fact they are unmoved. How fucking revealing!

Marx *hated* theocratic reactionaries. Read him, sometime.

Marx wasnt much a lover of capitalism but i am not sure hated quite fits in with the dialectical materialist conception of the world.

If the capitalist press ignore Marxists why not try to reach a mass audience some other way? For Marx this was a first principle, as he showed when capital was serialised in France.

  7. Jim Denham said,

Read the Communist Manifesto, Steve (especially the section on ‘Reactionary Socialism’) – oh yes, I forgot: you *have* read it, haven’t you? You just don’t understand it.

  8. SteveH said,

Yes I have read it. An interesting historical document.
