Defend Dale Farm families!
Eviction notices have been served to 51 traveller families on the Dale Farm
site in Essex, sparking a call for activists to help defend their homes.
Basildon Council has served the notices which give them until the end
of August to leave Dale Farm, which was first occupied in 2001.

Travellers at the site, thought to be the largest “illegal” encampment in Europe and home to
around 400 people, have offered to leave peacefully if alternative plots are
provided for them.

The cost of enforcing the eviction has been put at more
than £10 million, with finance coming from the Home Office, Essex Police,
Basildon Council and the Department for Communities and Local Government and
others.

Instead of persecuting a minority community, they could spend the
money protecting jobs and services, and help integrate the travelling community
into society instead of demonising them as scroungers and criminals.

Activists are being urged to join a resistance activity weekend on
Saturday July 9, which will include sessions on legal observer training,
discussions with residents and other resistance activity workshops.
A call-out has also been made for supporters to join Camp Constant on Friday July 29

the attack on the dale farm travellers is for me yet another double attack on working people and the poor.those who rule over us think they have aright to rule us and to look down at us.they demonise us,pretend we do not exist,divide us into deserving and undeserving,and reinforce the negative divisions by gender,orientation,religion,race,enthnicity and our class.
it makes me sick,and literally sick at that.
i think often we turn our anger and distress on each other.enough is enough.we need to unite and fight back.
workers have no country,but we have a world to win.
the students showed the way here last autumn.and people across the world are challenging and refusing their masters.last thursdays strike made another step forward,and showed a glimmer of how things might be different.

We have been totally let down by this government. I don’t know which cloud this judge has been sitting on for the past 6 years but he should be knocked off his perch and told to live in the real world. We have suffered so much down here I just want to sit down and cry buckets but no I have to pick myself up and fight again. Our human rights are non existent, why will no-one listen to us, why is this allowed to happen to us. We have no faith in our judicial system whatsoever. Please, please can someone help us because we are at a loss as to what to do.

ive lived and worked in london,coventry,glasgow,sheffield,ipswich,yarmouth
in britain and tucson and cleveland in the united states amongst a wide variety of people but mostly other working people and the poor.i have worked alongside the young,offenders,and the needy and those with a variety of difficulties and troubles
i have also met a few of the rich and priveleged,i actively avoid celebrities,politicians,those who rule over us and those who look down their at us.
i would rather spend the rest of my life amingst ordinary working people and “the rest”of us that dont count for much than a further few seconds amongst those whi rule over us or that think they do or have pretensions to do so.
i also think that some people deserve to be haunted by their contempt for others. if they are unable to come to terms with the reality that not everyone else matches their own self righteous and perfect self image.

I am a retired former British Steel worker and have no idea what your response is supposed to mean. I also have an idea that its all too easy to “support” travelers when you don’t have them on your door step. Traveler camps bring with them agressive dogs, huge numbers of cars, men going door to door selling stolen goods or offering to tar driveways and fights down the pub.

Tell enough people we’re in financial hardship, and its believed, hike the prices up and people feel it, but these are choices being made, just like the £10million to evacuate Dale Farm residents. And on Tom’s comment, when they’re evicted from Dale Farm, they’ll be on more door-steps and people will be more outraged – with media propaganda’s support … mark my words, moving Dale Farm is the beginning of a longer story for these people that will see a lot more people angered and travellers persecuted further

So can we all just buy some farmland for peanuts and build as many houses as we want? Why do these people think they are special and can ignore the rules that everybody else has to abide by? They are no longer “travellers” so they should just live in a house with planning permission like everybody else. They don’t need to be homeless if they leave Dale Farm.

well that is what lots of property developers actually do, not only them but supermarkets and other small businesses. My local tesco refused to unbuild the supermarket when retrospective planning permission was declined, in the end the council caved in.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens at dale farm, with all the cameras and coppers that will be there, the bailiffs will have to be scrupulously legal. My experience of bailiff busting during the poll tax was that they weren’t all that good at their jobs when they couldn’t make violent threats or use harassment to get their way.
On tv some of the travellers have suggested that they will build a ring of fire, I doubt the fire brigade have the right to trespass to put out a fire that poses no threat to people or property

The local council at Basildon, Essex, have spent a third of their annual budget on evicting the travellers at Dale Farm. The cost is increasing. This weekend, the people in charge of overseeing the eviction will not be getting any sleep at all. Travellers from all over the country have been arriving to give support to the residents. When the showdown takes place, it will be a miracle if their isn’t any violence. This could all have been avoided. Dale Farm is quite a big site, with many people living there. Where are they supposed to go next? The local council have moved on this for one simple reason: to appease a small but viceferous strain of local bigots, who have managed to stir up bad feeling against the travellers, turning them into modern day folk devils.
Basildon council should have spent a sliver of this wasted budget on a local campaign of consciousness raising, bringing people up to date on why bigotry and racism should be shunned, and reminding the local tax payers of the horrible reality that Roma people face in Europe, as well as the violence meted out to gypsies by the nazis. In light of the terrible events in Norway this weekend, it is more urgent than ever that we stand up to the bigots.
