Your Desert Island Discs
Martin, like me, was thoroughly pissed off by the the Desert Island Discs gesture to democracy; he writes

I’m more into Gardener’s Question Time myself. That might have more practical use on a desert island.
Any list like that which doesn’t include “My Way” is starting off 20 points ahead.
You could start an desert island anti-discs – what songs would make you throw yourself in the sea.

What a good idea (anti-discs I mean, not throwing yourself into the sea). For me it would be anything by Wagner, Liszt, Lennon and/or McCartney or Bert Bacharach, and “country music” as a genre. I’ve left out other stuff too horrible to even be mentioned…or to count as “music.”

I thought the official selections were shit too. I haven’t listened to the programme yet but it sounds like its a good panel.
At the risk of annoying Jim, by the inclusion of Pink Floyd and no Jazz(Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit was close), here’s mine:
1. David Bowie – Life on Mars?
2. Simon & Garfunkel – Kathy’s Song
3. Pink Floyd – Great Gig in the Sky
4. REM – Losing My Religion
5. Lou Reed – Perfect Day
6. The Smiths – That joke isn’t funny any more
7. Cat Stevens – Sitting
8. The Stone Roses – I am the resurrection
My book would probably be 1984, or Alice Through the Looking Glass for something more cheerful.
Luxury item – Lifetime supply of English Breakfast Tea made properly with loose leaves.
