Government cuts are already damaging jobs and services. Much worse will come in October’s spending review.

Ministers say that there is no alternative, but the cuts won’t just hit vital services, they threaten the economic recovery. The Con-Dem coalition’s policies are not just about reducing the deficit, but undermining publicly accountable quality services.

Take education. The school buildings programme has been cut to pay for new academies and so-called free schools that threaten every other school.

Before polling day the Conservatives told us that frontline services would be spared and the vulnerable protected. Liberal Democrats said that they would oppose early cuts that hit the economy. Both pledges have been broken.

Lobby of parliament, Tuesday 19 October 2010, Houses of Parliament, Westminster, London - from 12:30-16:30

In the June budget, the Con-Dem coalition government signalled its intention to impose large scale cuts to social provision in this country.  The forthcoming comprehensive spending review on October 20th will reveal just how deep and damaging these cuts will be.

There will be a major lobby of parliament by trade unions on 19 October, the eve of the comprehensive spending review, to oppose further cuts.  This lobby is a focal point in the union movement’s fight back against the feared massive assault on the jobs, terms and union organisation of our members.

After the rally a carefully targeted list of government MPs will be lobbied by trade unionists and those most likely to suffer from the cuts. For further details and regional travel arrangements contact:

Once again, nice bit of music, shame about the poster. James D, why not keep us entertained by the music and give up on the politics? Under certain circumstances you might know this makes sense.

One important point in this article is that the affect of the Tory-Liberal cuts will not be felt immediately, ok people may slightly reduce consumption due to job insecurity but when actual job losses occur and fewer people are left with more work and services are actually cut, only then will the impact be really felt. So when a Tory says today that some economic data shows their policies are working we can say rubbish your policies have yet to be implemented.

We really should document the human misery these cuts cause, alongside fighting against them. I fear the class is in no position to mount an effective battle so data for future battles will be important.
