Pope’s Visitation
The Pope was in Edinburgh today and his motorcade passed my office. We all downed tools and gawped from the windows. I don’t know what proportion of my firm would be a) practising Christians; b) Roman Catholics but I would think very few. It was the celebrity and splash and the sense it was an historic event that got us all moving, including the high ups. However, except for the Popemobile it wasn’t much to look at, just a pack of police on motorbikes in front and behind, with a few minibuses with shaded windows in between.
The Pope has been groaning about the secularism of this country and Europe in general. Ungrateful old bugger. If secularism hadn’t happened, ultra-Protestant Edinburgh would be rioting today with No Popery crowds. Jenny Geddes would be leading the charge shouting, “Dare ye say the Mass in ma lug ye son of the whure of Babylon.” Militant Protestantism is no longer with us, and the hideous sectarianism of the west coast of Scotland is dying, but it’s no thanks to either Papes or Prods but to the indifferent agnosticism that now rules.
When you come through the Arrivals channel into Edinburgh airport you’re greeted by a big cut out declaring, “The City of the Enlightenment.” I bet the official escorts avoided that particular egress. I note that the route he was taken on didn’t go along the Royal Mile, past the statue of John Knox and the whacking great statue of David Hume.

Seen gods representative the other night, his scripted message speaking to the masses in Glasgow, only a Pope could get away with, the need for tolerance, the need for non secular bigotry.
Mind you impressive the turn out.If only a socialist leader could get the same. Now that would be a miracle.

Just watching the coverage on sky news, the flock begging Anne Widdicombe for her autograph, war criminal Tony Blair with seats at the front. Lets start building those concentration camps now!!!
