Errol Leslie Flynn (20 June 1909 – 14 October 1959)
Not, perhaps, a great actor: but a great star. His best film? It’s between The Sea Hawk and The Adventures of Robin Hood (both directed by the brilliant Michael Curtiz with music by the sublime and neglected Erich Wolfgang Korngold): I tend to go for Robin Hood, partly for the obvious political reasons, but also because Basil Rathbone is the ultimate sneering, screen villain (a Brit, of course). And Olivia De Haviland as Maid Marion is every schoolboy’s fantasy…

Thanks for that fascinating link, Bob. Yes, Flynn was a thoroughgoing shit both politically and personally – a point I perhaps should have made in the post. That doesn’t stop me enjoying his films, though it does make me feel a bit guilty about it.

Jim Denham;
What makes you say such vulgar words about Errol Flynn? I am not assuming, but I am convinced that you knew extremely little or nothing at all about Errol Flynn. If You really would like to know some of the real stories about him please talk to me. I am glad you enjoy his movies, because they are great, but about his private life please let me talk to you, that is if you wish to know the truth.
Best regards
