Iraq Veterans Arrested at DC Anti-War Demo

The beginning of the march

At an anti-war demonstration held yesterday, numerous Iraq Veterans Against the War were arrested by Washington, D.C. police as they crossed a police line. The photos from are inspiring and stunning and very reminiscent of the photos of vets throwing their medals in the protest during the 70s. Both show the absolute failure of the wars and administrations for which young men and women are giving their lives while killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.

Here is the report from Indymedia (the photos are from Indymedia DC):

Iraq vets are arrested in uniform by DC police

“We are the Troops! Bring Us Home!”

@189 protesters were individually arrested while stepping onto and then standing on wall surrounding the Capitol steps, during a “die-in” protesting continuation of Iraq War. Many members of Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent were arrested, including family members and mothers of vets and active duty, and Vietnam vets.

As of 4pm, the Capitol police tried to stop arresting anyone. Someone in charge yelled that the protesters had made their point, and the police at the wall started to push back anyone trying to get arrested, and sprayed chemicals from a small red canister, on 2 who tried and finally succeeded in getting arrested. Capitol Police told the NYTimes that arrestees will be charged with “illegally crossing a police line.”

The ugly face of American fascism

Earlier, a single line on Penn Ave of “Gathering of Eagles” and Young Republicans, a majority of whom never served in Iraq, yelled “traitor” at the Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent, heading the antiwar march of thousands. The Iraq vets were chanting, “We are the troops! Bring us Home!,” while marching with flags printed with the names of big war contractors, Bechtel, Lockheed Martin, Blackwater, CACI.

I took part in a local demonstration against the war, with several 100 others. Luckily it didn’t have theatrics, like DC. There was a counter demonstration of 10 people at best.

I might just be overly cynical, but why are ‘ Iraq war veterans’ wearing BDU’s which have been out of date for 15 years, and in some cases over 30 years?

The so called VETS are probably just worthless pieces of fecal matter that couldn’t hack being in the Military to start with. No one is twisting anyones arm to be in that God forsaken country. We do it willingly and those who are serving over there are not protesting like some spineless slug. We do our jobs very well so those who want to get arrested and shout stupid crap can do so. It is those rights we protect and get killed for. So whine like some kid whose sucker just got taken away or do something worth while, like maybe get a fund going for those left behind by the travesties you say the government is imposing on us.

Agree with you about the last bit – there should be a fund for ex vets who have been left stranded because of their involvement in a useless war. The rest is just bollocks – if people join the army for a job because there isn’t another option (take the officers out of the equation, let’s be honest, that’s why they do it) then they deserve people’s help. The only worthless pieces of fecal matter in the equation are that gibbering evangelical wreck in the White House and his cohorts of idiots, bigots and interest groups. Fucking “free marketeer” who thinks God told him to invade Iraq. What a dick.
